Coronation Street viewers made the same demand after a new character was introduced. Drama continued in Weatherfield following the aftermath of Monday’s tragic events.

The episode was centred around David and Shona as she gave birth to their baby girl, while the other characters were coming to terms with Billy’s death. One scene in particular stuck with viewers, when Bernie served an unusually chatty new customer in Roy’s Rolls.

Dr Vincent Harper had driven up from Bristol to perform Shona’s specialist surgery in order to give birth to her baby. Last month, David and Shona received the devastating news that their baby has a potentially cancerous and requires a complex operation.

But the doctor’s pit stop at the cafe had viewers wondering if the surgeon is here to stay for longer. Dr Harper ordered a cup of tea before speaking to Bernie about Billy’s death. He said: “There’s not many of them around- gay vicars.”

Bernie was taken by surprise as she said: “How did you know he was gay?” The doctor appeared to be flustered as he said: “I’d read it in the newspaper.”

Viewers were taken through each activity in Dr Harper’s day, as he then made his way to Weatherfield General as the replacement doctor for Shona’s complex operation.

After a comical run-in with David Platt in the car park, Dr Harper completed the difficult surgery and told the proud parents it was a success. He said it was a long road to recovery for Shona, and he had fitted a tracheostomy so their new baby could breathe.

It was an emotional scene as David said to his wife: “I think Billy must have been looking down on us today.”

As the episode came to an end, Dr Harper was on the phone to his family and it was revealed it was also his birthday today. Meanwhile, Shona and David decided on their baby name.

The couple chose to name their baby “Harper”, as a heartwarming way to give thanks to their surgeon.

Taking to social media, fans are hoping Dr Harper is here to stay as they made the same demand. One said: “The surgeon in today’s #Corrie was so unusually prominent for a guest character. Is he staying?!

A second said: “I hope that Doctor Vincent stays, quite a good character and good actor” and a third said: “Thought today’s #Corrie was really great. Lovely focus on David and Shona, while still delivering #Corriedale aftermath. Using the crash to do an episode of that makes that kind of thing worthwhile. Also kinda loved Dr Harper. Bring that sweet man back!”

More suggested that Dr Harper could have a connection to Billy or Bernie. One said: “Anyone else think the scenes in the cafe between Bernie and the doctor were a bit weird and off? Maybe something will happen going forward.” Another said: “Feel like this doctor knows Billy, maybe a relative.”

Coronation Street airs at 8:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX
