PinkPantheress: ‘People are less willing to listen to electronic music made by a Black woman’ · News ⟋ RAThe UK artist told The Hollywood Reporter “there’s a lot of people that don’t necessarily understand” what she represents.PinkPantheress discussed the additional hurdles faced by Black women in electronic music during a recent interview.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the Bath-born producer said that “people are less willing to listen to electronic music made by a Black woman,” and believes that she’s missed out on certain opportunities as a result.
“There’s some considerations I would like to get as an artist which I might not be getting right now,” she said. “Since maybe it’s harder to put me into a genre. I’m in a very privileged position musically, but I can feel a little bit like I’m hitting all these markers and it still feels like I’m getting overlooked, simply because there’s a lot of people that don’t necessarily understand what I represent, nor do they want to take a look because I think it just doesn’t make sense for them.”
Other topics touched on in the interview included performing at Glastonbury, TikTok trends and meeting her idol Hayley Williams of Paramore. It came after PinkPantheress recently received an honorary doctorate in music from the University of Kent. Her latest mixtape, Fancy That peaked at number three in the UK album charts.
