Plans have been submitted seeking full planning permission for the erection of three outdoor padel tennis courts at Culcheth Sports Club.
Other sites in the town have applied for courts linked to the growing sport over the past 12 months.
The latest bid that Warrington Borough Council is being asked to look at includes a covered canopy, enclosure fencing, and low-level lighting at the Charnock Road site.
Two of the courts would be covered under a lightweight Perspex canopy, while the other would be an open court, according to applicant Ace Padel Ltd.
Padel is an increasingly popular racquet sport similar to a mix between tennis and squash, but played on a court that is smaller than a tennis court.
Planning documents state: “The application site is located within the confines of Culcheth Sports Club, The Daten, an established sporting facility.
“The proposed padel courts are an alternate sporting type that will go hand-in-hand with the facilities already on offer at the site.
“The application site is located centrally within the wider site, located on unused grassland adjacent to the main buildings and between existing tennis courts and football pitches.
“Further to the south, an area will be dedicated for tree planting to allow a 10 per cent uplift in biodiversity net-gain provisions to replace the loss of the grassed areas.
“Lighting columns form part of the illumination for periods of low light or nighttime, built into the walls of the court.
“These lights are directed solely at the court playing areas and are less intrusive than the existing football pitch and tennis court lighting columns, given the smaller individual court playing areas.
“The proposed padel courts will offer diversification of the existing sporting facilities and aid with the financial obligations of the sports club facility, which in recent times has encountered financial difficulties with operating costs.”
