Greg Van Avermaet has been appointed as Head of Riding Experience by Italian brand Basso Bikes.
Belgian ex-pro Van Avermaet rode in the WorldTour for Swiss team BMC Racing and its successor CCC team from 2011 until 2021, when he switched to the AG2R-Citroen team for the 2021 to 2023 seasons, also riding BMC bikes, prior to his retirement from road racing.

During that time, he won Paris-Roubaix in 2017, a number of other Classics and the 2016 Rio Olympics road race gold medal. He wore the Tour de France yellow jersey for a total of 11 days across multiple Tours and was number one in the UCI rankings in 2017.
He stayed with BMC after retirement, switching to gravel racing, still on BMC’s bikes and finishing 30th in the 2025 Unbound 200.

Basso Bikes is celebrating its 50th year in 2027, and says that in his new role Van Avermaet will still be racing, but on its bikes rather than BMC’s, as well as helping Basso to increase its profile (and presumably sales volume) and hosting brand experiences and community events.
‘I’ve found myself in a place with people who are deeply passionate about cycling and have grown up with it; the opportunity to build this brand together with them truly motivates me. We aren’t just preparing to celebrate 50 years; we’re launching the next 50 today,’ says Van Avermaet.
According to Basso, Van Avermaet chose to work with the brand to help push it into the elite division of global cycling, increase the brand’s profile and help it engineer higher performance bikes.
