A section of the canal at Clipsley Brook has become unusual in its appearance over the past day, with the water turning white in colour.

Residents in the area have expressed concern over the pollution, with one local person saying: “The water is grey-white and the smell of solvent is overwhelming enough to give me a headache. It smells like paint thinners, xylene or benzene.”

Residents have also expressed concern about the wildlife in the area.

One resident in the area who wished not to be named told the Star: “It’s happened before, there’s evidence of Clipsley Brook pollution on a Facebook group going back to 2018…but the pollution has never been to this extent before.

“It’s criminal, it will cause so much damage to the canal ecosystem. The volume of pollutant that has been put into the Brook looked like from drums or an IBC it was so thick.”

The Star contacted the Environmental Agency, which is now investigating the mysterious substance polluting the water.

A spokesperson for the agency said: “We received reports of a potential pollution incident at Clipsley Brook in Haydock. Following investigation, the source of the pollution has been identified and stopped.

“We have taken samples for further testing and have launched an investigation.

“We encourage anyone who suspects water pollution to contact our 24/7 hotline on 0800 807060 as a priority.”
