Coronation Street fans were left surprised by a ‘jumpscare’ as they hailed the show’s ‘best villain ever’ in a reminder of their reign of terror on the cobbles.

The ITV soap has been seen joining in an online trend which is seeing social media users look back at what they looked like, or what they were doing, back in 2016, as the decade since the period of time unfolded begins.

In posts on Instagram, X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook, Corrie shared a number of photos which gave a reminder as to what was happening on the cobbles 10 years ago.

Among the storylines recalled were Adam Barlow and Daniel Osbourne’s arrival in Weatherfield, Carla Connor’s ill-fated wedding to Nick Tilsley and the tragic death of Kylie Platt.

But it was the return of Pat Phelan that caught many off guard. It was in 2013 that the character arrived on the cobbles, tormenting poor Anna Windass and blackmailing her into sleeping with him. However, it was in 2016 that he first got his appetite for killing when he stood over Michael Rodwell and watched him die as he suffered a heart attack.

The twisted builder then forced hostage Andy Carver to shoot Vinny Ashford before killing Andy himself. He then later shot mechanic Luke Britton and left him to die in a fireball.

Actor Connor McIntyre won Villain of the Year at the British Soap Awards 2018 for his chilling portrayal of the murderous builder. After a terrifying four year reign over the cobbles he went out with a dramatic ending when he was stabbed through the chest by his nemesis Anna Windass during a horror siege at the bistro. Viewers then later saw him being zipped into a body bag.

Following his feature in the social media post from Corrie, which was captioned: “10 years on, and 2016 still lives rent free #Corrie,” fans were quick to respond – and even called for his return.

First, ITV’s social media team replied: “Wasn’t ready for the Pat Phelan jump scare.” @j.me_01 said: “Pat Phelan TO THIS DAY is the best villain the street has ever had. MUCH.” @mattwilliams26598 commented: “Phelan was absolutely first class!” @nicoli1985 wrote: “Pat Phelen was one of the best characters.”
