A wheelchair user died after suffering injuries sustained in a fall while he was using a travelator at a health centre.

Retired restauranteur Juan Pedro Patureau had visited St Peter’s Centre in Church Street on August 5 of this year for a dentist’s appointment. As he made his way out he discovered one of the lifts was out of order but instead of using the alternative list he opted to go down the travelator which connects the first and ground floors.

Moving walkways, including inclined ones, are typically not designed to be used by wheelchairs or prams. While making his way down, Mr Patureau, who lived at Brierfield House Care Home in Nelson, fell from his wheelchair and banged his head.

The 77-year-old, who was born in Argentina, was taken to the Royal Blackburn Hospital where he was diagnosed with a subarachnoid haemorrhage. As Mr Patureau was taking blood thinning medication this had to be stopped to prevent further bleeding but he subsequently suffered a number of strokes and died, eight weeks later, on September 29.

The cause of death was recorded as ischaemic stroke and atrial fibrillation, with a traumatic subarachnoid haemorrhage and aspiration pneumonia listed as contributory factors.

An inquest into Mr Patureau’s death was held at Preston Coroners’ Court on January 9. Area Coroner Kate Bisset returned a narrative conclusion. She confirmed that nobody was at fault for Mr Patureau’s fall.

She said: “Juan Pedro Patureau died on the 29th September 2025 at the Royal Blackburn Hospital. Mr Patureau had been admitted to hospital on the 5th August 2025 after he suffered a fall from his wheelchair whilst attempting to use a travelator at the St Peter’s Centre, Burnley.

“As a consequence of the fall, Mr Patureau suffered a bleed within his brain which required him to stop taking blood thinning medication which he was prescribed to lower his risk of suffering a stroke or cardiac event.

“In the course of his hospital admission, Mr Patureau suffered a number of strokes from which he did not recover and died.”
