Ruben Amorim’s sacking has raised questions about whether Marcus Rashford could return to Manchester United in 2026.
Marcus Rashford was frozen out by Ruben Amorim and accused of training poorly under the Portuguese head coach.
As a result, Rashford joined Barcelona on loan for the 2025/26 season, and there is a £26m buy option available to make his stay permanent in the summer.

Barcelona have held talks over Rashford and are seeking a cheaper deal due to their financial constraints.

Just days before his dismissal, Amorim fell out with Jason Wilcox, Manchester United’s Sporting Director.
Wilcox admitted to interfering with tactics, and while their relationship was said to be good throughout Amorim’s first year at United, it quickly deteriorated.
Now that Amorim is out of the picture, pressure is on Jason Wilcox to get United back on track. However, it seems he does not see Rashford as a part of that plan.
Speaking on Transfer Insiders podcast, Jamie Jackson explained that Wilcox was heavily involved in the decision to loan Rashford, so there would be resistance to welcoming him back.

“What happened with Marcus Rashford and Manchester United, you know, the kid obviously grew up as a fan and lived the dream and here we are.
“I mean it’s such a shame. Obviously [Thomas] Tuchel picked him for England, right? I’m just trying to think what scenario might lead to having him back.
“But as I understand it, there might still be resistance from the hierarchy anyway. So it was an Amorim thing, but it was also a Wilcox thing as well. So, that’s also a factor.”
Marcus Rashford’s Man United career is all but over
It seems that it is in the best interests of United, Barcelona and Rashford to agree to a permanent deal in 2026.
Rashford has been thriving in Spain and manager Hansi Flick is clearly eager to make him a permanent part of his Barcelona squad.
United find themselves in another transition period with a new head coach arriving in the summer.
Cashing in on Rashford as an academy product to improve United’s PSR position is the best option for all parties, so that the funds can be reinvested in a squad rebuild.
Reports suggest United want a new left winger, which strongly suggests that the transfer planning at Old Trafford does not anticipate Rashford’s return.
