Work on a new budget supermarket is due to start this spring.

Lidl is aiming to open a new store near Medway Valley Park, in Strood, by the end of the year.

It will be located on an old landfill site within a chalk pit off Roman Way and Cuxton Road, close to Diggerland.

Original plans submitted to Medway Council in July 2022 included parking spaces for 117 vehicles.

The supermarket already has a branch in Strood town centre.

It comes as the giant German retailer announced major UK expansion plans, which include launching 19 new supermarkets over the next eight weeks.

And it will be investing £40 million to upgrade its existing estate.

The proposed foodstore will be designed to a high standard and will incorporate energy-efficient building management systems and measures to maximise operational efficiency.

The store will have a gross internal area of 2,278 sqm, with 1,413 sqm of this being the sales floor. The company says it will include wide aisles, an attractive modern layout, an in-store bakery, and a customer toilet.

There will be a glazed elevation and a canopy feature, which will provide design interest as well as shelter to the customer entrance and the trolley bays.

Lidl’s national improvements programme includes new tills, larger freezer capacity and a wider product range, as well as energy-saving features such as natural refrigerant chillers and smart lighting systems to reduce electricity use.

The investment comes shortly after Lidl opened its 1,000th store in the UK and supports its ambition to continue growing its bricks-and-mortar presence.

The retailer says it currently reaches more than 60% of British households and contributed £14.5bn in gross value added to the UK economy in FY24.
