The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office has had plenty of run-ins with wildlife from bears, to alligators to snakes, but securing the world’s second-largest bird in handcuffs is certainly out of the ordinary.

“In my 25 years, I’ve never handcuffed an emu,” Cpl. Thomas Keisler said. “This is definitely a new one.”

It started with a very mobile but flightless bird on the loose causing some commotion amid traffic on County Road 13 at about 10:30 a.m. on Jan. 9, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
