Cabinet member for environment and community safety, councillor Freddie Bailey, said: “Every year, thousands of people are fly tipping indirectly, unaware they are doing anything wrong.
“If your waste is found dumped, you could be held responsible for the crime. Fly-tipping spoils the environment and the cost is ultimately at the local taxpayers’ expense.
“Every year littering and graffiti costs taxpayers nearly £2 million pounds.
“To ensure safe waste disposal seek a waste transfer note to ensure you are not liable.
“Whether you find someone through social media, an advert, or you hire someone cold calling, be sure to ask for their waste carrier’s licence and check they are a registered waste carrier on the Environment Agency website.”
If you see a fly tipping in action to call 999 and report the crime in progress, if you discover fly-tipping you can report it to the city council via their website.
