News Catch Up – Friday 16 January

The man that has been charged will see his court appearance coincide with Mr Reid’s funeral on Monday.

He was pronounced dead at an address in the Society Court area of Coleraine on Friday.

Local people say that Mr Reid was thought to have been attacked in the early hours of Friday, January 9.

No ambulance was called at the time of the vicious attack, and there is said to be anger in the area over the incident.

It is believed the father-of-one lay fatally injured for several days before his body was discovered by police on Monday, January 12.

In total, eight people, including a teenager, have been questioned in connection with the murder.

Police have said they also believe the victim may have been involved in an altercation sometime between Thursday, January 8, and Saturday, January 10, in the Society Court or Society Street areas.

Over the weekend, forensic officers have been at the property where Mr Reid’s badly beaten body was found.

On Thursday, police were seen searching an apartment building in connection with the incident.

The PSNI is appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

A spokesperson said: “Detectives are working at pace to establish the exact circumstances surrounding Mr Reid’s death and [the PSNI is] appealing for anyone with information that could assist our investigation to come forward.

“If you saw or heard anything unusual, no matter how insignificant you think it may be, please contact police on 101 quoting reference number 552 of 12/01/2026.”

Mr Reid’s death notice states he had most recently lived in Coleraine and in Somerset, England, but was originally from Scotland.

SDLP MLA Cara Hunter said the Coleraine community is “deeply shocked” by the murder.

She said: “It has left many people struggling to come to terms with what has happened so close to their homes. My thoughts are with the family and friends of Wayne Reid as they begin to process their loss.

“I want to acknowledge the swift response from the police, which will offer some reassurance to the local community at a very difficult time. I would urge anyone with information that could assist the investigation to come forward and speak to the PSNI.”

Sinn Fein councillor Niamh Archibald said she was saddened by the news and wished to “extend my sympathies to his family and friends at this sad time”.
