Police have issued a statement after a BMW became stuck on the tram tracks and caused travel chaos in Manchester on Sunday morning (January 18).

The vehicle had been abandoned on the Metrolink tram track, sparking two hours of travel chaos as services were suspended on the Ashton line. No trams were able to run between the Tameside town and Manchester Piccadilly.

Twelve stops were out of service through Tameside and east Manchester as a result. A blue BMW 3 Series came to a stop on the tracks between New Islington tram stop and the tunnel which leads to Manchester Piccadilly.

Recovery workers later attended the scene, with the car removed by Transport for Greater Manchester from the track by 12.30pm. Trams soon resumed with ‘severe delays’ into the afternoon.

Greater Manchester Police said the car had been abandoned after it was suspected to have broken down on the tracks. Enquiries are ongoing to find the owner, the force added.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson confirmed the car had driven up the tracks before breaking down. “Officers attended and are now making keeper enquiries to find owner,” a statement said.

“There are no reported injuries and no arrests made. We are making enquiries to establish driver and circumstances of abandonment. The vehicle was removed by Transport for Greater Manchester.”
