Rishi Sunak‘s new job with a California-based AI firm is worth £373,000, it has been revealed.

The former prime minister is earning the sum as a ‘senior adviser’ at Anthropic, according to the latest register of MPs’ financial interests.

Mr Sunak’s entry shows he took on the role in September for a 12-month period and he will be devoting just 70 hours work to the San Francisco-headquartered start-up.

The ex-Tory leader is donating his earnings to The Richmond Project charity, which he and his wife Akshata Murty founded with the aim of boost numeracy skills across all ages.

He is being remunerated with 3,547 shares over the year, which has been calculated at a value of £373,000.

Since leaving Downing Street after the 2024 general election, Mr Sunak has also taken on roles with Stanford University, Goldman Sachs, and Microsoft.

He also has a newspaper column with the Sunday Times and has earned £750,000 from various speaking engagements in the US, India and South Korea.

Mr Sunak was PM between October 2022 and July 2024 and was widely expected to relocate to California, where he and his wife met, after his general election defeat.

But, in his final Prime Minister’s Questions appearance as Tory leader, Mr Sunak vowed to spend more time ‘in the greatest place on Earth’ in reference to his Richmond and Northallerton constituency.

‘If anyone needs me, I will be in Yorkshire,’ Mr Sunak added.

Anthropic has developed the Claude AI models and was founded by former members of OpenAI, which developed ChatGPT.

During his premiership, Mr Sunak made tech regulation a significant priority and hosted an AI safety summit at Bletchley Park in November 2023.

When he announced his roles with Anthropic and Microsoft in October last year, Mr Sunak posted on LinkedIn: ‘I have long believed that technology will transform our world and play a key part in determining our future.

‘I am excited to help these two companies, as they address the big strategic questions about how to make tech work for our economies, our security and our society.

‘We stand on the edge of a technological revolution whose impacts will be as profound as those of the industrial revolution: and felt more quickly.

‘In my role as a senior adviser, I want to help these companies ensure that this shift delivers the improvements in all of our lives that it can.’
