Emmerdale spoilers follow.

Emmerdale continued its flashback week on Tuesday (20 January), attempting to unravel the mystery surrounding Ray Walters’s murder. Yesterday’s episode showed Laurel Thomas’s story on 2 January, as she found out Ray’s true nature, while also putting her son Arthur in the frame as a possible suspect.

However, the episode ended by showing Graham Foster, back from the dead, and looking on at Ray as he was confronted by Arthur.

Tonight it was finally time for answers over Graham’s return as he was shown on 2 January visiting ex Rhona Goskirk, who had believed he was dead for nearly six years.

At Smithy Cottage, Rhona was understandably shocked when Graham snuck in and revealed he was alive and also aware that her stepdaughter April Windsor was in trouble.

Graham then explained how he had faked his own death after finding out Kim had asked Pierce Harris to kill him.

He went on to reveal that, due to his background in the SAS, Graham was able to ‘play dead’ after being hit by Pierce’s car, so that when Billy Fletcher and Priya Sharma saw his body they believed he’d been killed.

Graham then used DI Dent to help cover up his death. But Rhona was understandably upset that Graham had just left her to deal with the consequences of his death, including being tormented by Pierce.

Graham went on to explain that he had planned to go back for Rhona but he ended up getting drunk and was put on a ferry by his friend who lied to him and said Pierce had been arrested.

Going on to explain why he was back, Graham shared that he was now sober and got work where he “fixed problems the police can’t”.

Graham explained he was hired to “dispose of a problem for a powerful man”, adding: “Then I found out the true nature of his business, of him and had a change of heart.”

April’s name then came as being caught up in everything and Graham knew he had to come back and help.

Rhona then explained it was Celia and Ray who were controlling April and showed him pictures of them, with Graham promising he “won’t make the mistake of sparing Ray like I spared Pierce,” before giving Rhona his number.

With Graham now on a mission to find Ray, the episode ended with Marlon trying stop Ross from driving away after saying he’d “deal with Ray”.

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 8pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
