The Star reported on a mysterious substance that appeared in the brook in Hayock last week after residents became increasingly concerned over the water’s worrying appearance.
One resident said: “The water is grey-white and the smell of solvent is overwhelming enough to give me a headache. It smells like paint thinners, xylene or benzene.”
Concerns were mounting among residents regarding the area’s ecosystem, with many worried about the local wildlife.
One resident said: “It’s criminal, it will cause so much damage to the canal ecosystem. The volume of pollutant that has been put into the Brook looked like from drums or an IBC it was so thick.”
The Environmental Agency informed the Star that they had received the reports of a potential pollution in Haydock.
They said: “Following investigation, the source of the pollution has been identified and stopped. We have taken samples for further testing and have launched an investigation. We encourage anyone who suspects water pollution to contact our 24/7 hotline.”
The agency has now confirmed that enquiries into the pollution are being carried out by their Catchment Officer.
“Our next steps will be determined once an additional site visit has taken place and the sample results have been analysed and received,” they continued.
