Chris Eubank Sr has always been a man of great principle.
The legendary middleweight often speaks of the warrior code when it comes to boxing, and he himself upheld that with honour. As well as being teak tough and a born winner, Eubank always likes things to be done properly, which is why he has often spoken out against his own son’s rivalry with Conor Benn.
He was happy when the first planned fight through and has said there should be no rematch after his son won the eventual contest back in April, because the weight difference between the two is unsafe.
Speaking on his YouTube channel Call Chris Eubank, ‘Senior’ reflected on a fight from his own career after he was asked about a bout against Dan Schommer, which he revealed to the caller he thinks he should have lost.
“It must have been 10 years or so ago, I contacted him, but I don’t know how I contacted him, but I apologised to him for him being robbed. There was no way I won that fight. I apologised to him. I may have even teared up, because I understand what it’s like to be robbed. That was a real travesty. He beat me hands down.”
Eubank fought American Schommer in 1994 in defence of his WBO middleweight belt. It was the peak of ‘Dangerous Dan’s career and the only fight he lost, although many at ringside on the night thought he should have won. He retired afterwards with 30 wins, one draw and this was the only loss on his ledger.
Eubank lost the belt a year later to Steve Collins, and ended his own career with three more losses, one to Joe Calzaghe and two to Carl Thompson, before walking away in 1998.
