Lee Bowyer is a boyhood West Ham United fan, and he actually spent two separate spells with the club throughout his career as well.

Bowyer was a great player in his day and he made 60 appearances for West Ham although his best days were spent with Leeds United.

Bowyer’s second spell at West Ham came to an end in 2009 when he was moved on by Gianfranco Zola.

The now 49-year-old has spent time in football management after hanging up his boots, with spells at both Charlton Athletic and Birmingham City.

Lee Bowyer highlights problem with Nuno Espirito Santo at West Ham

Nuno has found it tough going in charge of the Hammers so far.

He has overseen just three Premier League wins during his spell as West Ham manager and is still yet to see his side keep a clean sheet.

However, Bowyer thinks he knows exactly why Nuno has been struggling to get a tune out of his Hammers side.

When speaking on The Managers Podcast, Bowyer was asked to give his opinion on Nuno’s struggles in charge of West Ham.

The former Hammers pinpointed one very specific reason why he believes Nuno has struggled to implement the playing style he actually wants to at the London Stadium.

“Pace is a massive thing in the game now,“ Bowyer said.

“That’s the way the game’s gone. Especially in a low block because you’ll never get up the pitch otherwise.

“And that’s why Nuno did so well at Forest and then he hasn’t got those tools at West Ham at the moment to do what he wants to do.“

Urmmmmm….what?! How would you feel if West Ham SOLD Summerville to Spurs?! 🤔

Nuno’s system relies on pace to thrive and currently, only Crysencio Summerville offers any kind of outlet inside the final third.

If the former Wolves, Tottenham and Forest boss is to get the best out of his system at West Ham, he needs to add more pace to his front-line.

Whether or not he is able to do that during the remainder of the January transfer window remains to be seen.

However, if Nuno fails to sign at least one player who possesses rapid pace, the West Ham fans may well never get to see the best of his system at the London Stadium.
