Sapey Golf Club, near Bromyard, was previously owned by gypsy millionaire Alfie Best’s company, Wyldecrest Parks, but the 44-hectare property was sold by agents, Savills, in 2025.

Brett Walton has applied for permission to turn the clubhouse into a self-build residential dwelling, with alterations to the fenestration and landscaping.

The application said that the golf course had been losing a “significant amount of money” each year, and had become unviable.

The property was on the market for two years, and for a number of months with no other purchasers coming forward who were willing to run it as a golf club.

Though Mr Walton’s previous application to turn the site into a tourism and leisure complex with four “high-quality chalets” was refused due to a lack of detail on the scale and operation of the site.

One objection had been made over the loss of the golf club.

The current application said that better golfing facilities were available elsewhere, adding that there is “strong historic evidence” that the site is not viable as a golf club.

They believe the building is suitable for reuse without need for substantial development or alteration, with the building in a structurally sound condition.

If plans are given the green-light, changes are set to include a balcony being added off the dining room, the addition of a ground-floor window, and the removal of an external staircase.
