We’ve had to wait so long for The History of Sound in the UK that it’s already streaming in the US. However, UK fans of Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor can now finally see the movie as it’s been released in UK cinemas.

Directed by Oliver Hermanus and written by Ben Shattuck (based on two of his short stories), The History of Sound follows talented music student Lionel (Mescal) and fellow student David (O’Connor) as they bond over a deep love of folk music.

Years later, they reunite for a journey through the backwoods of Maine to collect traditional folk songs. It’s a journey – and a relationship – that will shape and change Lionel’s life for years to come.

The History of Sound was hailed as “essential viewing” by NME who added that it’s a “beautiful period drama that’s as gorgeous as it is heartbreaking”, while The Daily Beast said that it establishes Mescal and O’Connor as “two of Hollywood’s finest young stars”.

If you fancy checking it out this weekend, The History of Sound is out now in cinemas following its release in the UK today.

“We felt very boyish in each other’s company throughout. I’ve always said this to Josh, but he brings out a childlike version of me. I haven’t felt that kind of degree of boyishness in myself for a long time,” Mescal said of his co-star last year, adding that the movie isn’t just about the chemistry between them.

“There is a kind of real sense of companionship, and the joy and loss that comes with the presence and absence of that. It’s not just about sex and the intensity of falling in love. It’s deeper than that.”

If The History of Sound isn’t the movie you fancy seeing this weekend, it’s a busy release weekend at UK cinemas with other new releases including Chris Pratt’s sci-fi thriller Mercy, Irish real-life football drama Saipan and horror sequel Return to Silent Hill.
