Harry’s former girlfriend, whom he dated intermittently between 2004 and 2010, was another regular contact included in his witness statement. So serious was the pair’s relationship that there were rumours of a royal engagement, and even after they called it quits, Chelsy Davy was invited to Prince William and Catherine’s wedding and to Prince Harry’s wedding to Meghan Markle in 2018. In the statement, the Duke of Sussex explained that, due to the long-distance nature of their romance, a great deal of personal information was exchanged over the phone.
‘Chelsy Davy, a former girlfriend. We met in about early 2004 and were in a relationship which continued, on and off, until around mid-2010. Our relationship was long distance for the majority of the time we were together, with Chelsy and I often living in different countries,’ reads Davy’s entry on the list.
‘We, naturally, spoke about all types of personal matters, including all aspects of our relationship and this was often through calls, texts and voicemails left on her mobile and landline phone in South Africa,’ Harry continued. ‘As she was my girlfriend, I trusted Chelsy with the most private of information and vice versa.’
Harry then explained: ‘I know that [private investigator] Gavin Burrows admitted doing lots of unlawful activities in respect of her, which is deeply troubling but explains how Associated got so much information about us (often before others).’
In 2021, Burrows told the BBC that he had targeted Davy for ‘a lot of surveillance work on her phones,’ including ‘a lot of voicemail hacking.’
