On January 24, in mid-afternoon, Owen Jennings wouldn’t have expected to capture a “moment of magic” as a wild otter was photographed upon a platform near Labyrinth Nightclub, Taunton.

Owen was just a few feet away and managed to capture several images of the wild animal before it swam away.

The semi-aquatic mammal is considered rare and elusive to spot in person in Somerset’s county town, let alone see one chowing down on an afternoon snack it had caught itself, as Owen quickly found out that this otter in particular had managed to catch a fish and eat it in front of several members of the public.

“I’ve never seen a wild otter before, and it was a privilege to witness one that had caught a fish in the heavily swollen River Tone,” Owen told the County Gazette.

” As the otter quickly ate the fish it wasn’t bothered about me stood a few feet away filming.

“It was a few moments of magic.”

Through the archives, otters have been spotted swimming in the River Tone on some occasions, with the majority of sightings coming at French Weir Park in Taunton.
