A Guildford-raised reigning boxing world champion is celebrating the opening of his new gym in the town that he calls home and says that “everyone is welcome”.

Alfie ‘Classy’ Clegg is the reigning flyweight IBO Youth World Champion and Commonwealth Silver title holder, having taken both belts in fights over the last two years.

The 26-year-old boasts an impressive professional record of 13 wins and no losses, with his recent fights even featuring on Sky Sports Boxing.

For many years, Alfie and his family ran a boxing gym from the back garden of their home in Bellfields, Guildford, offering 1-on-1s and group sessions for all ages.

However, what started from a shed has since grown into a thriving boxing community in the town.

On Saturday, January 17, the undefeated boxer celebrated the grand opening of his new boxing gym on Westfield Road in the Slyfield Industrial Estate in Guildford.

The opening saw a considerable attendance from the community, featuring live boxing demonstrations, refreshments from the Guildford-based Riky’s Kitchen, alongside raffles and auctions.

The gym has been opened in partnership with Lockwood Studios, who described it as the “anchor facility” in its wider Lockwood Wellness Hub based on Westfield Road, which is due to officially open in the Spring.

Classy’s Boxing Gym as it is to be known, is described as a community gym, advertising daily group and one-to-one sessions on its social media platforms and adding that “everyone is welcome”.

Alfie Clegg took to Facebook following the grand opening and said: “What started as a vision, late nights, hard work, and belief has finally come to life.

“Opening day was packed from start to finish, and I’m honestly overwhelmed by how many people turned up to show love and support. Seeing everyone turning up for me and being a part of this reminded me exactly why this journey began in the first place.

“This gym and this journey would not be possible without the incredible support from the community. Every message, every visit, every one sharing and following — it all mattered more than you know. I’m deeply thankful to God for guiding me through every step, and grateful for every single person who has been involved along the way.”

Alfie’s journey to become a pro-boxer has been a long one. Back in 2015, the then 15-year-old dedicated a boxing win to the victim of a fatal stabbing in Guildford that year. For which he was presented with an award by Anti-Knife UK, in a ceremony attended by the town’s MP at the time.

‘Classy’ Clegg entered the professional boxing scene in 2021. In the years since, the 26-year-old has continued this fine form, winning all thirteen of his pro-fights and becoming the IBO Youth World Flyweight champion in February last year.

The Guildford-raised orthodox boxer is due to fight for the currently vacant British flyweight title on February 28, 2026 in arguably his most important match-up to date, against Sean Bruce.

Craig Hills, Director of Lockwood Studios also spoke on the opening of the new gym, and said: “This partnership is exactly what the Lockwood Studios is all about. We are dedicated to providing more than just physical space; we offer pathways to better futures.

“Alfie’s work provides crucial discipline and mentorship, directly supporting our goal to nurture the mind and body alongside creativity and enterprise.”
