Manchester United boss Michael Carrick has admitted he is hoping for the best over the fitness of one key star.

Amid all the debate over potential starters against Arsenal, head coach Michael Carrick decided to keep it simple.

Carrick stuck with the same starting XI he selected in the 2-0 win over City, with Patrick Dorgu keeping his place on the left wing.

Dorgu justified his coach’s faith by scoring again, this time netting a fantastic half-volley that left David Raya with no chance. United won the game 3-2.

But there is a tiny doubt over Dorgu’s fitness.

Michael Carrick on Patrick Dorgu

Michael Carrick spoke to club media post game and admitted there was a small concern over Patrick Dorgu.

Dorgu received treatment after going down late in the game when chasing a potential one-v-one.

The Dane was substituted and sat out the final 10 minutes, and Carrick provided an update.

He said: “He obviously came off with, hopefully, a little bit of cramp, hopefully, it’s nothing worse.

“At this stage, it’s hard to tell, so we’ll just have to wait and see. Hopefully it’s not too bad.”

Carrick is right to be cautious as it would be a major blow if Dorgu does have to miss any time, just as he hits the best form of his Manchester United career.

‘He’s been immense’

Michael Carrick praised Dorgu’s contribution, paying the 21-year-old a major compliment. He also commended his link-up with Luke Shaw.

Pat’s been a big player for us, obviously he’s scored two goals but in terms of the threat and athleticism and quality, he’s been immense down the side with Luke against two teams that ask a lot of questions.

“I am delighted for him because the two goals he’s scored are very different goals. It’s nice to see him smiling and happy.”

Manchester United end the weekend in fourth place in the table, taking advantage of Liverpool’s defeat to Bournemouth.
