A woman who’s heart stopped beating for a minute after she gave birth has explained exactly what she saw and felt during that time. Hannah, who is a stay at home mum with two children, had a complicated birth with her second baby.

She went into labour naturally when she was 36 weeks pregnant, and gave birth in a children’s hospital due to the baby being diagnosed with a bowel obstruction before he was even born – meaning he would need surgery straight away after giving birth.

Hannah has also been diagnosed with intrauterine growth restriction, which means the baby grows slower in the womb than expected. She experienced this in both of her pregnancies, with her first son weighing just 4lbs 13oz, and her second weighing 5lbs 10 oz.

But more issues started to arise after she gave birth. She said: “So I gave birth at 1.33am and everything was fine then. I was bleeding normally, I was walking around like everything was totally cool until about 10 hours later.

“So later that day, in the morning I was at the NICU with my baby and it was just down the hall and I started getting some really bad cramps. So I went to the bathroom and I had some pretty big clots, and I got concerned because there’s like signs everywhere saying if it’s bigger than an egg like you need to tell the doctor.

“So I told a nurse and she came and checked me and like checked the clot. Back to the NICU and I was holding my baby and I got the worst pain I have ever felt in my entire life, like worse than labour pains.

“I told my husband I was like can you please grab this baby I think something’s wrong. So he grabs the baby I stand up and I feel this gush and so much blood so much clots, I had to cover myself with a towel and be wheeled back to the maternity ward.”

A nurse did an ultrasound and said she thought there was left over placenta inside her uterus and they would need to remove it. They had to go back in a second time due to how much pain Hannah was still in, but they thought everything should be okay from there.

A short while later Hannah started bleeding again and called a nurse to tell them something felt “really off”. She described how 20 people started running into her room and things started to go “blurry”.

She said: “There’s some things that are like super precise and like clear, and then there’s some things that are really blurry. So he [her husband] in he’s standing next to me, and then all of a sudden they move him away from me and I was like ‘what the heck is happening’.

“They lay me back and I look across the room and I can see my water bottle and I start thinking ‘gosh I’m so thirsty I wish someone would just get in my water bottle’… and I’ve watched a lot of shows and I was like that’s not good.

“I literally have no idea medically what’s going on with me, there’s a million people surrounding me, they have another IV in me. There’s pandemonium going on in my room. I hear my doctor say we need to prep the OR and I was like ‘s**t they’re gonna take my uterus’ and this is when I died.

“I couldn’t see myself, but I saw the room like from above, and it was really crazy, and then the white light. This was insane it’s like a train came straight at me and like blasted me up into oblivion.

“It was extremely peaceful, I felt overwhelming peace but with a touch of sadness because I knew I was never gonna see my kids again. That was really devastating to me, but it was almost just like a shoulder shrug because I was just like ‘well there’s nothing I can do about it’.

“I was clinically dead for about a minute and then it felt like god like power punched me back into earth and I like come to and I throw up this like cat vomit like substance.

“I’m suddenly awake and I’m like ‘what just happened’ I’m holding the anaesthesiologists hand thinking it’s my husband and she’s like petting me and she’s like ‘you’re gonna be okay, everything’s gonna be okay’ and I was like ‘what happened?'”

Hannah explained that she received a couple of blood transfusions, but the doctor could not explain what to her. She explained that she would love to have a third baby, but is too afraid of dying.
