Anis Ben Slimane and Ali Ahmed struck in the second half, after Romain Esse had whacked Frank Lampard’s side in front prior to the interval.

The Canaries’ third straight league win under the Belgian moved them four points clear of the relegation zone, and dreaming of an improbable late-season play-off tilt.

Clement made two changes to his starting line up from the 5-0 triumph at the Hawthorns.

Slimane was in for Oscar Schwartau while Jose Cordoba replaced Harry Darling alongside the ever-present Ruairi McConville, after the Panamanian international was brought in at half-time last midweek.

New Manchester United loan signing, Harry Amass, was included on the bench but the game came too soon for Paris Maghoma, who City confirmed as their third January window signing earlier on Monday.

Lampard’s table-toppers were without highly-rated central midfielder Jack Rudoni, but recent Millwall loanee, Esse, was again preferred to Tatsuhiro Sakamoto.

US international Haji Wright led the Coventry forward line but his one-time international colleague, Josh Sargent, was again absent, with Clement outlining on Sunday there was no change in his transfer stand-off with the Canaries.

Cordoba came across sharply to shut the door on Wright, as Coventry looked to start on the front foot inside the opening two minutes. Vladan Kovacecic caught Brandon Thomas-Asante’s looping header from the corner.

Jay Dasilva then sprung the visitors again down the left before Victor Torp stabbed goalwards but McConville deflected his goalbound effort behind.

Ben Chrisene dropped to the turf in the eighth minute clutching his left shoulder but was able to continue following assessment as Amass appeared for a warm up.

Jovon Makama tumbled under Milan van Ewijk’s attentions tight to the byline in the 10th minute but referee Kirk was swift to wave away home penalty appeals.

Slimane snapped a pass into Cordoba to spark a flowing move from Clement’s side that ended with Ahmed cutting across the 18 yard box but rifling into the terraces.

Chrisene induced a heart-in-the-mouth moment in the 15th minute when he tried to chest a diagonal ball from the Sky Blues but for a split-second appeared to have let Viktor Torp a run on goal before a perfectly-timed sliding challenge.

Kellen Fisher clipped a ball into Slimane with space to roam, and the attacking midfielder accepted the invitation to advance but choked his shot tamely at Carl Rushworth.

Kenny McLean then freed the overlapping Fisher who surged forward but his low far post cross just evaded Makama.

The powerhouse striker then escaped in the 26th minute down the left channel but his intended cross for Tony Springett was cleared by Bobby Thomas.

Cordoba came as close as any Norwich player to breaking the deadlock in the 27th minute when he advanced onto McLean’s flick to slam a strike against the base of Rushworth’s right-hand post.

Pelle Mattsson took a swinging arm in the face from Thomas-Asante in the 34th minute, with the Coventry attacker clearly irked by the close attentions of the combative midfielder. But the officials did not see the incident with play allowed to continue.

Esse smashed Coventry in front in the 38th minute with a near post finish past Kovacevic, after McConville and Fisher got themselves in a tangle trying to deal with Torp’s initial hit from the edge of the area.

Kovacevic denied Wright with a sharp reaction stop in the 42nd minute with Coventry smelling blood.

Clement made a double change at the interval with Jacob Wright and Papa Amadou Diallo replacing Mattsson and Springett respectively.

The hosts were level within a minute of the restart, Ahmed threading a gorgeous ball behind Thomas for Slimane to calmly draw Rushworth and round the keeper to slot.

Fisher’s defensive instincts cleared Wright’s bobbling strike, which had beaten his keeper but the full back slid back to clear on his line.

Norwich had another close shave in the 56th minute when Ephron Mason-Clark’s point blank header from Torp’s free kick cannoned against the bar and out.

Makama surged over the halfway line with four Coventry defenders for company in the 64th minute but overhit his pass for Diallo up in support, before the young winger’s cross reared up at Ahmed.

But the Sky Blues failed to heed the warning. Makama harried Liam Kitching into a turnover moments later, who then released Slimane to feed Diallo for a cut back the late-arriving Ahmed slotted to spark bedlam at Carrow Road.

When order was restored Kovacevic needed to remain vigilant at his near post to shovel behind Wright’s low smack.

Amass made his City debut in the 75th minute, with Ahmed departing to a rapturous reception as his dream start to life in Norfolk continued.

The tricky Sakamoto backed Wright into his own area but the Norwich midfielder got a block in.

Josh Eccles then headed over before he was clattered by Kovacevic.

In the 80th minute both sets of fans, and Norwich City players, joined in a moment’s applause in memory of Jim Davies, who passed away after a medical emergency at the end of the club’s recent FA Cup win over Walsall.

Makama tried his trademark pin on Kitching and spin, but sliced his shot into the Lower Barclay in the 89th minute.

Clement went into the book in stoppage time for his protests to the fourth official, after Fisher appeared to go down in an off-the-field incident, prior to a further minor melee which broke out at the final whistle between players and staff from both sides, before order was swiftly restored.
