Cillian Murphy has now officially returned to the 28 Days Later universe in 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, so what better time to revisit a previous collaboration with writer Alex Garland and director Danny Boyle as we wait impatiently for 28 Years Later 3.
Sci-fi thriller Sunshine was released in cinemas in 2007 (nearly 20 years ago, sorry for making you feel old) and sees a group of astronauts sent on a dangerous mission to reignite the dying Sun. Murphy starred alongside a stacked cast that also included a pre-MCU Chris Evans, Rose Byrne, Michelle Yeoh and Hiroyuki Sanada.
It proved divisive at the time of release, although does hold a fairly decent 77% rating on Rotten Tomatoes with Toronto Star calling it “engrossing” and The Hollywood Reporter hailing it as “extraordinary”.
If you either haven’t seen it or fancy refreshing your memory to see what you thought of it, Sunshine has recently been added to Prime Video in the UK and is free to watch for all Amazon Prime subscribers.
Don’t worry if you’re not an Amazon Prime subscriber as you can sign up to take advantage of its 30-day free trial. Equally, Sunshine is also available to watch now on Disney+ if you subscribe to that streaming service.

Danny Boyle didn’t direct 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, which meant it was Nia DaCosta who got the honour of reintroducing Murphy’s Jim to audiences in the final scene of the sequel. It’s a relatively low-key scene that sees Jim teaching history to his daughter Sam, before they spot Spike and Jimmy Ink in need of help.
“I wanted it to reflect the domesticity that was on the page. He is making toast and tea for his daughter, he’s teaching her history, and they live in a cottage in the Lake District in the post-apocalypse,” she told EW.
“When you think of franchise filmmaking, you don’t think about movies like this. So I wanted to stay true to that, as well. I didn’t want it to be like, ‘Here comes the hero on his horse’.”
Sunshine is available to watch now on Prime Video and Disney+.
