It’s not just the US banks going all in on AI. French bank BNP Paribas has rolled out AI tools to various teams, including its investment bankers. Now it’s bringing in a former JPMorgan MD to further the charge.

Charles Holive is joining BNP Paribas as an MD and chief AI officer for its corporate and institutional bank (CIB), home to its markets and advisory teams. He joins after an 18-month stint at PepsiCo, where he was SVP of AI solutions.

It’s a return to banking for Holive. Before PepsiCo, he spent three years at JPMorgan as an MD. There, he joined as head of CIB applied AI and machine learning (ML) operations, before becoming head of AI/ML and digital tools services for the division.

BNP Paribas has been developing various AI products in its CIB. Last month, it rolled out an AI tool for bankers to analyze previous pitch data, while older AI tools have focused on analyzing the ESG performance of companies.

As a French bank, BNP is big on Mistral, the French AI lab that created the very on-the-nose French chatbot ‘Le Chat’. The bank signed a deal in 2024 giving it access to current and future Mistral large language models. Insiders suggest that Mistral LLMs aren’t universally popular among employees, however.

BNP Paribas did not respond to a request for comment.
