Middlesbrough sign Jeremy Sarmiento from Brighton in a loan with obligation to buy
Jeremy Sarmiento has been confirmed as Middlesbrough’s third signing of the January transfer window.
Boro confirmed the move from Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion, with the 23-year-old joining in an initial loan move with an obligation to buy in the summer, subject to terms of the agreement being met.
The forward adds ready-mate quality and Championship experience to Boro’s forward line, as Kim Hellberg looks to push Boro closer to promotion to the Premier League in the second half of the season.
Upon joining, the new man told the club website: “I’m very pleased to finally be here. The ambition from everyone at the club is what attracted me to Boro. I’m hungry to get going and I can’t wait to show people what I can do.”
The Boro boss previously admitted how much he liked the player, having first spotted him playing for Roberto De Zerbi’s Seagulls side. Hellberg previously credited the Italian as a major influence on his style of play.
In that sense, the belief is that Sarmiento will be comfortable adapting to Hellberg’s Boro model, while he brings Championship experience having won promotion in both of the last two seasons as Ipswich and Burnley, while also having a loan spell at West Brom in 2023-24 too.
The deal ended up being somewhat of a saga after month-long talks with the Premier League side over a deal. Boro walked away last week, only to go back in as Championship rivals Birmingham City attempted to hijack a deal. Sarmiento always preferred the move to the Riverside.

The loan deal with an obligation to buy in the summer effectively means payments will be deferred to a future financial period, Though it’s not certain whether such an arrangement is to benefit Boro or Brighton.
For Boro, they will either have the advantage of Premier League broadcast money, or sellable assets leaving the club for big transfer fees this summer, while selling clubs may often benefit from deferred payments in the next financial period, if they’re looking comfortable in that regard in the current period.
Sarmiento joins earlier January signings Leo Castledine and Finley Munroe in joining Boro during this month’s transfer window. With less than a week left of the window, Boro are hoping they’re not done yet.
They remain active in their search for a striker, those attempts to find the right player this month, who is both available and at an affordable price, have proven frustrating. They will also look to move some players on before the deadline at 7 pm on Monday, February 2, with at least two players needing to be removed from their original 25-man squad follwoing the arrivals of Sarmiento and Adilson Malanda.
