Coronation Street fans have been taken by surprise as they discovered the long-running show has been involved in another crossover – and it’s one they weren’t expecting.

Those who follow the drama on the cobbles know that the ITV soap joined forces with its Yorkshire counterparts, Emmerdale, for an epic TV event earlier in January.

The special, one-off episode was put together to celebrate a change to ITV’s soap schedule, with both Emmerdale and Corrie now airing in half an hour installments every weeknight, and saw the horror of a multi-vehicle collision unfold, as well as its aftermath, with characters from both shows caught up in the incident.

It was revealed that the explosive collision of Coronation Street and Emmerdale in the landmark Corriedale event was a massive hit with fans, peaking with 4.7 million viewers, averaging 4.2million viewers across the hour. The number has since been reported to have risen.

And while it’s not the same as their crossover with Emmerdale, it’s not been revealed that Coronation Street has its own starring moment in Marvel’s newest series on Disney Plus, Wonder Man, which launched on the streaming platform on Wednesday (January 28).

The series sees Sir Ben Kingsley making his return to the MCU. The Gandhi actor made his MCU debut in 2013’s Iron Man 3, where he played the villainous The Mandarin.

In a shocking twist, it turned out that Kingsley’s character wasn’t actually evil and was actually an actor named Trevor who was called in to try and cause havoc in Tony Stark’s life. Lovable football fan Trevor was last seen in Shang Chi. Making his third appearance, Trevor serves as a mentor for Simon, who is trying to balance his acting career with his newfound powers.

The scene in question sees Simon getting some tips of the trade from Trevor in his flat. In a shocking moment for UK soap fans, Simon notices a tape with ‘Coronation Street’ written on it as Trevor revealed he played a character known as Ron Jenkins.

Simon said: “Coronation Street, you played Ron Jenkins right?” Trevor replied: “Well done, ‘a pint of bitter please and one for my friend’. Every Brit did their stint. The Producers were thrilled to get me after my run as Lear.”

Coronation Street got itself a mention in new Marvel series, Wonder Man

And the mention has got fans talking on social media. @AlunParr said: “As if there’s a Coronation Street reference in the new Marvel Series #WonderMan My two worlds are actually colliding #Corrie.” @WhoPotterVian replied: “I’m shocked that Marvel Studios and, by extension, the US, even know what Coronation Street is. #WonderMan #Mcu #Corrie.”

@ConversationStr reshared the post and commented: “The cultural impact of Coronation Street confirmed.” @daisysmidgeley shared: “What the hell.” @DevskiTweets posted: “#Corrie in THE MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE whoever thought we would see the day #CoronationStreet.” @claireh5611 added: “Just wow #corrie #Marvel.”

As die-hard Corrie fans know, Sir Ben did play Ron Jenkins, a young fireman, in Corrie and appeared intermittently between November 1966 and March 1967. In 2009, he told The Sun that he had “fond memories” of performing on the show and praised its format as an interesting way of observing the social history of a time and place.

He said at the time: “Oh I did enjoy my time on Coronation Street. I said I might go back, have a pint in the Rovers Return. This took place in Salford, so it was very much my territory and my background. It was a marvellous show.”
