The Millennium Simulation Project is a series of computer simulations run since 2005 to understand how galaxies and galaxy clusters form and come together to create large-scale filamentary structures. The image shown here is from one of these simulations, which were run on supercomputers. It is accurate enough to understand many aspects of the observable Universe using Newton’s theory of gravitation. © Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics, Springel et al.
