Delano Burgzorg has completed a loan move from Middlesbrough to Bristol City, after an on-and-off saga throughout the month.

The forward leaves to join fellow Championship promotion hopefuls Bristol City on loaan, having looked set to make a permanent move to Ashton Gate earlier in the month. That initial deal was pulled by Boro, however, to the frustration of Robins boss Gerhard Struber.

But with Boro able to sign Jeremy Sarmiento after their own frustrations earlier in the window, that eased concern about attacking options and meant they were able to go back to Bristol City and sanction Burgzorg’s exit. The loan includes an option allowing Bristol City to make the move permanent in the summer.

Boro needed to move on a few fringe players this month in order to be able to strengthen their own squad during the January transfer window. Burgzorg fell down the pecking order, making him an obvious candidate to leave.

On completing the deal, he said: “I’m really excited to be here, I am a player who likes to score goals and get forward. I feel like the vision of the club is why I wanted to come here. I cannot wait to meet the fans with some big games coming up.”

Struber added: “He is a player who will give us a really good dynamic and physical power. This is the moment for us to bring out the best in Delano. He will give us a different phase and different style.”

Signed from Mainz in the summer of 2024 after a loan spell at Huddersfield Town, Burgzorg has made 71 appearances for Boro, with eight goals and five assists. The last of those goals was a dramatic late winner at West Brom earlier this month, in what proved a sweet send off.

Though he’s played all 13 games under Kim Hellberg so far, the club have strengthened in attack during this month’s transfer window, with Leo Castledine also through the door. They could even add one more forward before Monday’s deadline.

Burgzorg has moved to Ashton Gate on loan until the end of the season. Struber’s side currently sit seventh in the Championship and also have Neto Borges on loan from Boro, with a previous admission of interest in making that one a permanent transfer.

To do the incoming deals they want, Boro ultimately have to balance their squad numbers and also manage their finances carefully in January. They entered the month with their EFL squad full before Sarmiento and Adilson Malanda’s arrivals – both of whom will need adding at the expense of someone.

And despite his fairly regular game time in the first half of the season, Boro deemed Burgzorg a player they’d be willing to let leave. While Burgzorg had moments where he could look unplayable in a Boro shirt at times, he had a tendency to frustrate more often with his decision making and lack of end product.

Burgzorg joins Lukas Engel out of the exit door so far this month. Abdoulaye Kante will also leave in a loan to St Etienne, which will include an option to make that permanent. There could be more exits yet too, with Kante and Engel not on the 25-man registration list and therefore at least one spot still needing to be found.
