The star singer was given a tour of the control room and listened to school rock band Minerva performing live in the recording studio before sharing industry insights and reflecting on his own first steps in the music business.
“On a purely ego basis, it means the world to have a studio named after me,” Hawkins said.
“It’s great feeling. I wish we’d had something like this at my school.”

He also spoke to pupils about the creative mindset needed in the recording environment, explaining that “recording is a totally different experience to performing live as you probably already recognise.”
He encouraged students to perform in the moment, adding, “for me, there’s a tendency to overthink that stuff. But there’s something magical about the first performances. Once you’re comfortable in this space, don’t overthink it, just enjoy it.”

A school spokesperson said the new recording studio represents a major enhancement to the school’s already rich musical life.
The school now hosts regular open mic nights, jazz and cabaret evenings, and supports five active rock bands, and the Justin Hawkins Recording Studio will allow students to record, produce and refine their work using professional-level equipment, supporting creativity, collaboration and real-world musical skills.
