Detectives say such incidents are ‘concerning’ but ‘extremely rare’

Staff were threatened with a suspected firearm during an armed robbery at a branch of Subway in Salford. It happened at the sandwich chain’s restaurant at Ellesmere Retail Park in Walkden last night (Saturday, January 31).

A suspect arrived in a small, black car, sometime between 8.25pm and 8.35pm. “He then produced what appears to be a gun and fled with a small amount of cash,” Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said in a statement.

An investigation is now underway following the ‘extremely rare’ and ‘concerning’ raid. Patrols are being stepped up in the area.

Officers are also appealing for any witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

He was around six feet tall and was wearing a mask, a black hooded coat, black trousers and trainers, GMP said. As part of their appeal they have released a CCTV image of the suspect.

Detective Inspector Louise Haslam, of Swinton CID, said: “While this will be worrying and concerning, this type of incident is extremely rare in Greater Manchester.

“We will have extra officers in the area today and the next couple of days as we continue our investigation and provide a reassuring presence.

“We are keen to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time, or who has CCTV, dashcam or mobile phone footage to please contact us.”
