The January transfer window shuts at 7pm tomorrow, with the Blues seemingly only in the market for a striker before the deadline.

But, according to the Hull Daily Mail, Town are the side looking to prise centre-back Egan, 33, away from the Tigers, claiming that ‘he’s a key target for Kieran McKenna.’

Egan, a Republic of Ireland international, is under contract until the summer of 2027 and has played 27 games for the Tigers this season, scoring one goal, as they’ve mounted a surprise promotion push.

They moved above Town into third in the table with a 1-0 win at Blackburn yesterday.

Of Egan, Hull boss Sergej Jakirovic said: “If you ask me, I would like John to stay with us.

“If somebody asks at the beginning of the season, John Egan, you will play a big number of games, I think he will not believe in that, but he’s a very important member of this squad.

“John’s truly a leader with a lot of experience, and there is no surprise for me that he has some offers, so we will see, but if a player decides to go, you must respect that.

“I cannot stop anybody if he chooses to go, but I will fight to make sure he stays with us.”

Mark’s verdict

You can never say never in the transfer window – and especially with deadline day looming – but this one feels unlikely.

Town already have three established and experienced centre-backs in the building, with boss Kieran McKenna only saying on Friday that youngster Elkan Baggott will remain in Suffolk as the fourth choice CB this month, rather than head out on loan.

At 33, Egan wouldn’t be a signing for the long-term either – which again doesn’t really fit Town’s approach when it comes to adding to the squad.

Town will be hoping to be active before 7pm tomorrow, but it’s a striker they’re after, not a veteran CB.
