It was the end of an era in Sunderland this weekend, when a bakery that had been on the same street in the heart of town for 40 years served its final customers. But the good news for any regulars at famous Blandford Street shop Müller is that its two other branches in the area are staying open.
Now something we’ll always beat the drum for is the brilliant food and drink we have here in the North East. And those places at the heart of what makes our region so great are the independent businesses that have been grafting away for years and years and become a huge party of the community, as they end up going onto serve several generations of the same families.
Müller is a business that definitely fits into that category, so it was no surprise to see a wealth of comments flooding in on the post that appeared from its owners on social media this weekend, to confirm that Blandford Street shop would be closing on Saturday afternoon. Just a short walk from both Park Lane and the main station, the stretch is one of the best known in Sunderland city centre, meaning, as well as going in for some Swiss treats, loads of people will have walked past Müller, who sold their own red and white twist on Sunderland’s much loved pink slice for last year’s play-off final, every day on the way to and from work or to catch a Metro or bus.
Penning a post to mark its closure, its owners wrote: ‘It’s the end of an era. We close our doors in Blandford street for the last time today having been a Sunderland city centre staple for over 40 years. Our Villette Road & Sea Road shops are both staying open so we will be here for all your baked goods needs, plus there are new and exciting things on the horizon for our Sea Road shop so watch this space.’
Hugely grateful for the hard work of all their staff and the support from customers, the statement continued: ‘We would like to thank everyone that has supported us over the years, our business would not be the same without you all, you’ve brought joy and laughter to our lives and we’ve made some amazing friends along the way.
‘Secondly a huge thank you to every member of staff that has worked in Blandford street over the years… and a special mention to Hilda who is retiring this month, she has been the beating heart and face of the shop for the last few years and will be missed by everyone here at Müller’s and by all our customers too.’
By Saturday night, loads and loads of people had left comments, with one regular writing: ‘So sad, a real Sunderland gem and loved across the generations’ as another responded: ‘A Sunderland staple, all the best.’
