Pre-season can present opportunities for young players to make a bit of a name for themselves, and in impressing head coach John Cartwright, it’s fair to say young Hull FC winger Elliot Middlemas has done just that.

The teenager has featured in both trial games against Huddersfield Giants and Wigan Warriors, and has looked good value for them. He started against the Giants, scoring two tries on the left wing, taking a kick to score his first and running away after being put in the clear for his second.

At Wigan, he featured off the bench, first appearing on the left wing again and then on the right. He was solid, as was the case last week, under the high ball and also returned it well – and when he got his opportunity to show his speed, he did just that, getting Hull into position to strike through Davy Litten, who had some nice touches throughout.

Still only 18-years-old, Middlemas, who has trained with the first team this pre-season alongside fellow young guns Jon Turner and Rio Kassim, has spent the last two years in the academy after missing out on scholarship. He was picked up by the club after playing for local community side West Hull and hasn’t looked back, boasting an impressive highlight reel.

Standing at 187cm, he’s also very much of the same stock as Lewis Martin and Harvey Barron physically and could be one to watch this year in the reserves alongside the likes of Will Wilson, Jon Turner, Jordon Baker, etc., who all have reserves contracts.

“He’s a clever football is Elliot,” Cartwright said after Sunday’s game at Wigan. “He scores a lot of tries because he knows where to be, and very, very rarely does he not catch the ball on the full. He’s got good awareness and speed – he’s just a clever footballer.”

The reserves open their season against London Broncos on February 14. The full fixture list can be found here.
