Rex Gallagher took drastic action on Hollyoaks after a shocking development in the storyline involving Ste Hay, with the pair almost agreeing to reveal secrets. As one party divulged all, did the other?

The pair have had a difficult few months due to various incidents, with Rex grieving following the death of his mother, Grace Black. Ste, meanwhile, has also had trouble with his own son Lucas, who is now in prison.

Furthermore, Ste discovered that James Nightingale, his former husband, was alive and well after being presumed dead. Despite having past feelings, Ste pledged to forge on with his life alongside Rex.

Monday’s (2 February) instalment of the Channel 4 soap concluded with Rex putting on the lipstick that his mother wore, with tonight’s episode beginning as he and Ste visited Froggy in hospital.

Rex soon had to fend some questions from Ste, however, who spotted a lipstick mark on his coat. He made up a story that the mark came from Vicky Grant, but Froggy soon twigged that he was lying.

He encouraged Rex to come clean with whatever secret he was hiding, and he attempted to heed this advice as he bumped into Ste later on. Before he could tell all, Ste shared that James was in fact alive.

As they headed back home, Ste said that letting go of James was one of the “hardest” things that he had ever done, but reasoned that it was testament to the strong bond that he shared with Rex.

After disclosing his secret, Ste asked Rex to share his own, but he promptly left the house as his feelings got the better of him. Overwhelmed with conflicting feelings, Rex later burned all of Grace’s possessions.

With Rex being overcome with emotion as Ste encouraged him to open up, will he confess what’s been going on during his period of grief? And will James return to cause trouble in their relationship?
