A local architect has revealed his vision for the future of Grimsby Central Library.
The facility has been closed since March 2025, after a water leak exposed asbestos within the building. While North East Lincolnshire Council has approved the library’s reopening in principle, it has warned that it is unlikely to welcome visitors before spring 2029. Repair and refit costs are expected to reach up to £13.6 million.
Speaking at a recent meeting of the Library Select Committee, and amid discussions over the library’s future, Cleethorpes-based architect Mark Hodson of Hodson Architect unveiled his vision for a reimagined space, aiming to modernise the facility into a versatile, multi-purpose hub.
Hodson described Grimsby Central Library as his favourite building, recalling hours spent in the reference library as a student. He said, “This is my town. And there’s something about me that feels that the 36 year career I’ve had in architecture is leading to this point. This is my favourite building in the world. And it’s the only building I would chain myself to.”
He continued, “When I was at Chelmsford Secondary School, this building allowed me space to learn, allowed me peace and the platform to research and learn, do my revision, get my homework done, and do well at school. So, I owe it a great debt.”
Hodson’s proposal would see the library transformed into a modern space, with a gallery in the basement, a children’s library and evening-use space on the ground floor, and a mezzanine for quiet study and reading. He suggested the first floor could serve as a flexible community area, while the second floor would house archives and local history. The top floor might even host an artist in residence, and Hodson suggested adding solar panels to make the building more sustainable.

A workshop bringing together members of the public, community groups, and council representatives will soon take place in a bid to help shape the future of the library.
