Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Coronation Street has aired some dramatic scenes for Debbie Webster, as she revealed the truth to Carl about his parentage — but it tragically backfired on her and ruined her chances of avoiding prison. Ronnie bumped into Carl in the café and admitted that he’s incredibly worried for her after she accidentally called him “Ray” this morning, amid fears that her dementia will rapidly get worse in prison.

Carl insisted that he was going to fix his mess, leaving Ronnie confused. He went back home and asked Debbie if Carl was really the one driving on the night of the crash. She denied it, but rushed to go see Carl.

She caught him getting into his car to go and confess, and she told him she knew the truth but was adamant she wanted to take the fall to protect Carl. He wanted to know why, and she finally told him that he’s her son.

Back at Debbie’s, she showed him the hospital band and told the story about how she got pregnant at 17, was pressured to get an abortion, but wanted to keep the baby.

However, she was a child herself and felt like she couldn’t look after a baby. and eventually it was decided that her parents Bill and Elaine would raise Carl as their own.

“The longer it went on, the harder it became to say anything, and it just became the norm,” she explained.

Debbie said it looked like they were doing such a job of raising Carl and he looked like he was such a happy child, but he revealed that he felt like Elaine was “distant” and that it was because he wasn’t good enough, which led to a lifetime of rejection issues.

“You’re a lying, selfish bitch,” he snarled at her. “Anger doesn’t come close.”

A tearful Debbie said her going to prison in his stead would hopefully be a step to putting things right, but Carl cruelly told her she was only doing it for herself. He stuck the knife in further by saying he wasn’t going to go to the police anymore, and that he hopes she rots in prison.

Coronation Street airs on weeknights at 8.30pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
