England have been dealt a blow on the eve of their Six Nations clash with Wales after prolific try-scoring wing Immanuel Feyi-Waboso was forced to pull out with a leg muscle injury.
Feyi-Waboso was born in Cardiff and represented Wales U18s but controversially decided to represent England at senior international level. The 23-year-old failed to complete Thursday’s training session and has been withdrawn from the matchday 23.
He has been replaced by Sale Sharks winger Tom Roebuck.
Earlier this week Feyi-Waboso said Wales were a team he really wanted to beat.
“I just feel like it’s a team I want to beat,” he said.
“You have a few of them, France too, but they’re just a team I really want to beat,” he told the Times.
The British-Nigerian flyer grew up in Cardiff and represented Wales at under-18 level before leaving the Blues pathway after failing to secure a place to study medicine at Cardiff University, despite achieving an A* and two As at A-level.
He moved to Aston University and Wasps, then to Exeter Chiefs following Wasps’ collapse in 2022, continuing his medical studies in Devon.
Wales will be relieved not to be facing Feyi-Waboso who has developed into one of the deadliest finishers in world rugby.
Steve Tandy will hope Wales’ back-three of Louis Rees-Zammit, Josh Adams and Ellis Mee can cause some damage in their Six Nations opener tomorrow.
“In an ideal world we’d have given him an extra week, but the world isn’t ideal as we know,” said England scrum coach Tom Harrison.
“We do a really good job of ‘what ifs’ and what might happen and combinations.
“Does it disrupt some plans? Yes it does, because it’s changing a player.
“But we’ve done everything we can to make sure the next player is ready.”
