A new (and see-to-believe) 30-second spot from The Mandalorian and Grogu just dropped online, minutes after it aired during a commercial break at the Super Bowl. Deadline has also confirmed that the narrator is, indeed, Sam Elliott.
Check it out below:
The Hollywood Reporter says Jon Favreau directed the commercial as an homage to classic Super Bowl ads, shooting it in live action with assistance from ILM and the Lucasfilm creature and puppeteer team. Additionally, Lucasfilm marketing brand lead Ryan Stankevich addresses the tone they were going for with the spot:
“Our creative and marketing team landed on a unique concept that gave a nod to classic Big Game spots of years past. It captured the warmth, humor, and emotional connection between these two beloved characters and was the perfect next step for our campaign as we lead up to their big screen debut this summer.”
Though no one at Disney or Lucasfilm ever confirmed it, the prevailing theory was that the film would be dropping a full trailer online tonight, along with a shorter spot airing during the commercials. Trade reports had pointed to The Mandalorian and Grogu being present during the game, and because of the timing (three months away from release), we thought it’d be a full trailer, just like they typically do with Marvel movies coming out in May. The last time Star Wars had a movie come out on Memorial Day, however, was Solo, which debuted its first look via a minute-long commercial during the Super Bowl, followed by a lengthier teaser the day after during Good Morning America.
Plot details are largely being kept under wraps, though we have enough to make a good assessment of the story. We know that Sigourney Weaver’s character, Sgt. Ward, tasks Din and Grogu with a mission in the Outer Rim, during which they will run into Rotta the Hutt, voiced by Jeremy Allen White. We also know that the Shadow Council from The Mandalorian Season 3 will play a role in the movie. Here is the official synopsis:
“The evil Empire has fallen, and Imperial warlords remain scattered throughout the galaxy. As the fledgling New Republic works to protect everything the Rebellion fought for, they have enlisted the help of legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his young apprentice Grogu.”
The film is set to release in theaters over Memorial Day Weekend, on May 22. The film is directed by Jon Favreau, written by Favreau and Dave Filoni, and produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Favreau, Filoni, and Ian Bryce. The film stars Pedro Pascal as Din Djarin, Sigourney Weaver as Sgt. Ward, Jeremy Allen White as Rotta the Hutt, Jonny Coyne as an as-of-right-now unnamed Imperial Warlord, among others that haven’t been confirmed yet. Ludwig Göransson will compose the film’s score.
Miguel Fernández is a Spanish student that has movies as his second passion in life. His favorite movie of all time is The Lord of the Rings, but he is also a huge Star Wars fan. However, fantasy movies are not his only cup of tea, as movies from Scorsese, Fincher, Kubrick or Hitchcock have been an obsession for him since he started to understand the language of filmmaking. He is that guy who will watch a black and white movie, just because it is in black and white.
