ITV are launching their new series Betrayal, but what is it about, who’s in the full cast and where have you seen them before?

The broadcaster will be hoping that they have another major hit on their hands on Sunday night (February 8) when their latest star-studded drama graces the small screen.

ITV viewers are looking for a new drama to obsess over after the thrilling second season of After the Flood aired last month, which sees Sophie Rundle star as a police officer investigating the death of an unidentified man after a flash flood strikes a small English town.

With more shows than ever to choose from across the various channels and streaming platforms, Betrayal appears to be one you don’t want to miss or fall behind on.

What is Betrayal about?

Betrayal follows mid-career MI5 officer John Hughes, who is navigating a rapidly evolving intelligence landscape while struggling to keep his personal life intact. On a hunch John meets a British Iranian man with links to the Stockport gangland who claims he has intelligence about a plot on UK soil.

Before he can share his intel, the informant is executed and John kills the assassin in self-defence. However John soon finds himself under an intense internal investigation from MI5.

On top of facing scrutiny from his superiors, his partner Claire grapples with the secrecy that defines his world as he begins to question if he’s picked the wrong work field.

ITV’s plot synopsis states: “John’s efforts to save his marriage are complicated by his inability to let the case go. And when he meets Mehreen Askari-Evans (Zahra Ahmadi), an intelligence operative who is tasked with taking over John’s duties, he finds an unlikely ally.

“As John becomes increasingly convinced of the involvement of a hardline faction of the Iranian regime, he also starts to worry there are enemies closer to home. But can he identify the target and avert the attack before it’s too late?”

Lead actor Shaun Evans is best known for playing the titular detective in ITV detective series Endeavour. On top of this he played John Sweeney in Until I Kill You and starred alongside Suranne Jones in series 1 of BBC’s Vigil.

“I was in from the get-go, really. It’s about someone having a midlife crisis. Things are no longer working for John and he’s trying to find a way forward. If you set that against the world of international espionage, it becomes a very interesting dual story,” he teased.

Shaun’s onscreen wife is played by Romola Garai, who has played the titular role in a BBC adaption of Jane Austen’s Emma, Mary I in Becoming Elizabeth and Briony Tallis in the hit period drama film Atonement.

Filling out the rest of the main cast is Beyond Paradise’s Zahra Ahmadi, Deep Cover’s Omid Djalili, Luther’s Nikki Amuka-Bird, Three Little Birds’ Gamba Cole, A Midsummer Night’s Dream’s Matthew Tennyson, Coronation Street actress Hayley Tamaddon and House of the Dragon’s Anthony Flanagan.

Betrayal airs at 9pm on Sunday, February 8, on ITV1, with the second episode airing the following night at the same time. All episodes will be available on ITVX on Sunday.
