Witherford Watson Mann, which won last year’s Stirling Prize for its Appleby Blue almshouse in Southwark, is in the running for regional recognition with its oak-framed River Wing addition to the Grade I-listed Clare College, Cambridge.

The RIBA East shortlist also includes another University of Cambridge expansion project: Haworth Tompkins’ Pembroke, Mill Lane, for Pembroke College.

Meanwhile, Alison Brooks Architects, which jointly won the Stirling Prize in 2008, has made the list with its net-zero residential development within the 150ha Eddington masterplan in north-west Cambridge.

Other projects vying for a regional award include BEAM, a new council-funded multi-arts hub in Hertford by Bennetts Associates; the conversion of a garage into an artist studio by Edward McCann Architects; and a private chapel in Suffolk by Matthew Seaborn with the Whitworth Co Partnership and Donald Insall Associates.

RIBA East jury chair Julian de Metz, director at dMFK Architects, said: ‘The East region, diverse in typology, scale and context, boasts some spectacular architecture at every level. Congratulations to all those who made this year’s shortlist, with projects ranging from a modest, low-cost artist studio to major housing, education and arts projects.

‘But what elevates a good building of any size to become great architecture? This will be best judged by seeing those buildings in the flesh, and the jury is excited and privileged to be doing this.’

All projects shortlisted for RIBA regional awards will be visited by a jur. The winners will be announced later this spring.

The winners will then be considered for several RIBA Special Awards, including the regional Sustainability and Building of the Year prizes, before being considered for a highly coveted RIBA National Award, to be announced in summer.

Last year, the RIBA East Building of the Year was handed to Stanton Williams’ Young’s Court Development at Emmanuel College, Cambridge.

The shortlist for the RIBA Stirling Prize – the UK’s best new building – will be drawn from the RIBA National Award-winning projects and announced in September.

The Stirling Prize winner will be announced in October.
