The practice’s Heritage Quad and Technology Hub at the York Minster Centre of Excellence have both been named among the region’s finalists – the first step on the journey towards the 2026 Stirling Prize.

The shortlist also includes a four bedroom Passivhaus family home near Holmfirth by phi Architects, 12-storey office buildings at Wellington Place in Leeds by tp bennett, a house in North Yorkshire by Sadler Brown Architects-Group with Rural Solutions, the conversion of a former bed and breakfast into a fully wheelchair-accessible home by ArkleBoyce, and the revamp of the listed Calverley Old Hall by Cowper Griffith Architects.

RIBA Yorkshire jury chair Charlotte Harrison, a partner at Mass Architecture, said: ‘This year’s shortlist of seven projects embodied a high level of architectural quality across a broad spectrum of criteria.’

She said the projects ranged from ‘a large-scale city centre office development and a centre for the advancement of heritage skills to the reuse of a Grade I-listed hall and a secluded residence within a regenerated landscape setting’, adding: ‘I’m excited to visit the projects across Yorkshire alongside the jury.’

A regional jury will visit all the shortlisted projects, and the winners will be announced later this spring.

These will then be considered for several RIBA Yorkshire Special Awards, including the Sustainability Award and Yorkshire Building of the Year, before being considered for an RIBA National Award, which will be announced in the summer.

Last year, De Matos Ryan’s ‘controlled and considered’ new gallery at York’s National Railway Museum was crowned RIBA Yorkshire’s Building of the Year and was one of five projects in Yorkshire to pick up regional gongs.

It also earned practice director Jose Esteves de Matos the region’s Project Architect of the Year title.

The shortlist for the RIBA Stirling Prize – for the UK’s best new building – will be drawn from the RIBA National Award-winning projects and be announced in September. The Stirling Prize winner will be named in October.
