John Eustace has heaped praise on Derby County goalkeeper Josh Vickers and was thrilled to see him sign a new contract.

Vickers is back fit again after suffering a thumb injury was in goal to face Ipswich at the weekend, his first game since playing at Burnley in the League Cup at the start of the season.

The former Lincoln City stopper has proven to be an astute piece of business by Derby after he was picked up on a free transfer from Rotherham in the Paul Warne era.

He has produced some excellent performances when Jacob Widell Zetterstrom has been absent with the Swede currently out due to illness.

And he has been rewarded with a new contract which the club announced last month, penning a three-year deal that will run until the summer of 2029.

Eustace has been impressed by Vickers ever since arriving at Derby in February last year.

“I think Josh has been excellent since we came to the football club last year,” he said.

“When Josh has stepped in, he has made some crucial saves and had some fantastic performances.

“I’m delighted that he could extend his contract. He’s had a couple of games already this year where he’s been very good.

“He never lets you down when he comes in.

“He’s always ready the way he trains every day with the goalkeeping department and he’s top, top drawer.

“You can see the development of Richard O’Donnell, Jacob and and Josh and they’ve got a fantastic goalie coach in Paul Clements, who I’ve spoken about previously.

“The goalkeeping unit is improving every day.”
