Shark alert hits Ibiza as predator circles marina

A shark alert has been issued in a holiday spot loved by Brits after the beast was filmed swimming in a harbour.

A boat worker in Ibiza, Spain, noticed the injured animal circling in the marina earlier this week. Bosun Ediz Mehmet said he arrived at Marina Botafoc at around 8am on Monday, February 9 when he spotted the animal.

He said he saw what appeared to be a blue shark moving through the harbour. He said: “I work on a boat that is moored in Marina Botafoc and as I arrived there this morning at about 8am there was what looks like a blue shark about two to three metres long swimming around in circles in the harbour.”

Most adult blue sharks measure between 1.7m and 2.2m – though some have been noted to grow as long as 4m long. According to Mehmet, 46, from Cala de Bou, the shark appeared to be injured. He said it was behaving unusually as it moved through the water.

“It must be confused by the bad weather,” said one person who spotted the shark. Photos and videos captured by those who saw the beast show it swimming from side to side between the pontoons, with witnesses noticing a small wound on the upper part of the dorsal fin, which some believe may have been a bite.

It comes after a shark measuring around 2m was spotted prowling the shoreline of a Spanish beach, prompting tourists to be evacuated. Beachgoers were asked to leave after the 6ft 6in shark’s fin was seen poking above the waves just feet from where people were bathing.

“It’s a huge beast,” said one local as onlookers gathered on the shore to film the predator. Lifeguards warned beachgoers to take a safe distance as an emergency services boat was dispatched.

The boat crew managed to coax the shark away from the shallow water, where it was at risk of beaching. The close encounter took place at La Reya Beach in Puerto de Mazarrón, near Murcia in Spain. Clips of the shark were shared on TikTok, with one going viral with almost 1m views and thousands of comments.

“Between jellyfish and sharks, I’ve lost all desire to go to the beach,” said one person. Another added: “It’s a blue shark and does not normally attack humans.”

“I was swimming there in the bay, I turned around and that blue shark appeared next to me,” said Miguel. Alred pointed out: “It was probably in some kind of trouble, that’s why it was swimming around.”
