The Siddiqui family have become beloved fixtures on Gogglebox, yet there’s one member of the household viewers will never glimpse on their screens – mum Nasreen.

The popular family became part of the Channel 4 programme’s inaugural series in 2013, featuring Baasit alongside his two siblings, Umar and Raza, plus their dad Sid.

Throughout the years, the Derby-based Siddiqui clan have left audiences roaring with laughter through their witty remarks and entertaining reactions to television content.

Beyond the show, Baasit shares his life with spouse Melissa, and together they’re raising two youngsters, Amelia and Theodore. Umar and Raza are thought to be unmarried.

Father Sid – a former engineer who relocated to Britain from Pakistan at the tender age of 16 – is wed to Nasreen, and the couple also have two daughters who’ve opted to stay away from the cameras, reports the Mirror.

Whilst the Siddiquis’ partners frequently get mentioned during filming, they’ve never actually made an appearance on the show – including family matriarch Nasreen.

Furthermore, there’s a specific explanation behind Nasreen’s decision to steer clear of Gogglebox. Speaking to the Daily Mail, she dismissed any chance of joining her sons in front of the camera, pointing to language difficulties and her own personal preferences.

She told the publication: “It’s not something for me, I don’t speak very good English and I’m very shy. It’s best left to the boys. You won’t get me on the TV.”

Although Nasreen rarely appears on Gogglebox, the family has occasionally posted photographs of their mother across their social media platforms.

Last year, the family uploaded images from their Moroccan getaway, featuring multiple pictures of the seldom-photographed family matriarch. The accompanying caption read: “Dad, mum and the boys have been enjoying the summer break with a little holiday to Morocco. Not jealous at all.”

Regarding how the Siddiquis secured their place on Gogglebox, Umar described their distinctive casting experience to Radio Times: “We did a bit of an audition, where people came round with a camera and some flash cards – images of Boris Johnson, Simon Cowell.”

He continued: “And they said, ‘Right, just say the first thing that comes into your mind’. Whatever dynamic we had seemed to suit the show, because they asked us if we wanted to be part of it. And they’ve kept on asking us.”

Gogglebox airs every Friday at 9pm on Channel 4.
