Hollyoaks’ Ste Hay and Rex Gallagher prepare to host their engagement party next week – just as Rex’s emotional cross-dressing secret is exposed. Behind closed doors, Rex is currently battling with uncertainty over his identity, something he has been exploring alone in the aftermath of his mum’s death.
After trying on Grace’s lipstick in the past few weeks, Rex took one of Leela’s tops and felt confident wearing it underneath his mechanic overalls. While he has kept this to himself for now, Ro recently spied Rex dancing freely in a private moment.
Next week, the oblivious Froggy praises his grandson for the man that he’s become – unaware that Rex has ordered women’s clothes to the garage under a fake name.
Ste receives the parcel, but is baffled and subsequently sends the delivery driver away as he assumes he’s got the wrong address – but Ro overhears the exchange…

“Ro has an understanding of Rex as what he’s going through is similar to Ro’s own journey,” explains our Hollyoaks insider. “He encourages his mum Diane to donate some clothes to charity but makes up an excuse to secretly leave them outside the garage.
“Rex is happy as he tries on the dresses in private but is forced to hide when his grandad Froggy arrives home!”
On the day of Ste and Rex’s joint engagement party with Jack and Pearl, Ste and Jack clash over the plans – but it’s not long before the glitzy event is in full swing. As shocking truths threaten to be exposed, Ste decides to let old flames burn out with his old fling Dillon.
However, there’s soon disappointment for Ste as he takes a phone call and finds out that his daughter, Leah, has missed her flight home – and won’t be able to make the celebration.

Meanwhile, over at the garage, Ro tells Rex that he knows his secret, and encourages him to open up about exploring his identity…
“Rex confides in Ro that he’s been wearing women’s clothes, and the understanding teenager is totally non-judgmental,” our source says. “Ro reminds Rex that Ste loves him for who he is, no matter what, leaving Rex with food for thought.”
After his candid chat with Ro, will Rex summon the courage to be honest with Ste?
Hollyoaks airs on Mondays-Wednesdays with its Channel 4 streaming premiere at 7am, then an E4 broadcast the same night at 7pm. Full episodes are also released on YouTube a week after their Channel 4 release.
