Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has admitted he wants Arsenal to win the Premier League title. The former centre-back has also revealed that he will send a text message to congratulate Gunners midfielder Declan Rice if they become champions.

Mikel Arteta’s side are in a good position to win their first top-flight title since 2004. The Gunners currently sit four points clear of second-placed Manchester City after 26 games.

There is now genuine optimism in north London that Arsenal will finally win the league title after finishing runners-up in three previous seasons. Arteta’s men have 12 matches left to play, but will be wary of tough matches to come against Chelsea and Manchester City.

And Ferdinand has had his say on the prospect of Arsenal winning the title. When asked on his podcast if he would be at the title parade, the 47-year-old admitted he would not be going.

He said: “Hell no. That’s all I wanna know.

“I’ll be celebrating from afar. If Arsenal win it, I’ll be happy.

“I’ll be sending Declan Rice a text. I’ll be sending multiple Arsenal players messages saying ‘well done and thank you’, because City and Liverpool haven’t won it.”

Ferdinand also had his say on the title race run-in between Arsenal and City. He believes neither team holds an advantage in that respect.

He added: “That’s the thing that messes things up. It’s the mental games now, like, who’s playing first?

“If City play first and win, it’s one point before a ball’s kicked – pressure’s on. Different pressure.

“If Arsenal kick off first and are four points ahead, it ain’t the same pressure. It’s different.

“But I’ve looked at both of the runs, and I don’t think there’s much difference between them. I don’t think anyone’s is majorly more difficult than the other.”

Arsenal return to action on Tuesday night away at bottom-of-the-table Wolverhampton Wanderers. Arteta’s side will have the chance to go seven points clear of City before Pep Guardiola’s team host Newcastle United on Saturday evening (5:30pm)
